What is The 1815 CIO & why have we called it The Bowman Fund?
An independent UK-based charity... |
The 1815 Charitable Incorporated Organisation ('CIO') is an independent UK-based charity established by alumni of Brasenose College, Oxford to support all aspects of rowing at Brasenose College.
The 1815 CIO is registered with the Charity Commission of England and Wales (Registered Charity Number: 1162897). It is overseen by a group of trustees all of whom act on an entirely voluntary basis. At least three trustees are independent and normally drawn from amongst alumni of BNCBC. In addition, the governing body of Brasenose College can appoint up to two trustees. The Charity Commission's page for the 1815 CIO can be accessed here. Accounts and annual returns are available via this link. |
...whose origins lie in the 200th anniversary race held in May 2015 |
In 1815, Brasenose College Boat Club (‘BNCBC’) took part in, and won, the first recorded inter-collegiate eights rowing race against Jesus College. To mark the 200th anniversary of this occasion a re-enactment of this race took place in replica boats on the Saturday of VIIIs week.
In the run up to this anniversary race, a group of volunteer alumni organised itself with the goal of radically improving the finances and support network for BNCBC. |
It is building a long-term endowment for BNCBC... |
With the support of some generous pledges from 'anchor' supporters, the trustees concluded that the CIO would be most effective by raising an endowment fund to establish a dedicated, permanent source of long-term funding for BNCBC.
|
...that is to be known as The Bowman Fund. |
In September 2015, the trustees formally named the endowment fund "The Bowman Fund" in honour of both the then Principal of Brasenose College (Alan Bowman) and the Bow Man of the original BNC VIII of 1815 who would have been the first person across the finish line in an amateur rowing race.
